Welcome to Livermore, California.
Livermore is a city located in Alameda County, California. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 73,345. Traditionally, Livermore is considered the easternmost city in the San Francisco Bay Area before entrance to the Central Valley. Livermore is located in the Tri-Valley region, East of San Francisco. On Interstate 580 providing easy access to both the Central Valley and San Francisco Bay Metropolitan area. Founded in 1869, Livermore has an interesting history. It was originally settled by Costonoan Indians. It was established 1869 by William Mendenhall. Later, it was named after Robert Livermore, an English sailor who settled in the area in 1835. Livermore was the largest and fastest growing city in the region,. For most of its history it has been an agricultural community. Livermore offers a variety of community events including the Livermore Pro Rodeo, Harvest Wine Festival, Days of Wine and Honey, Old-Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration with fireworks, and Fitness Day.

Still today, one can find vineyards such as Wente Vineyards and Concannon Vineyards, which have graced the valley since 1849. Similar to the Napa Valley. In 1918, many Livermore ranches which sparked the Livermore Rodeo began to raise funds for the Red Cross during World War I. Later, during World War II brought significant changes to the region. Finally in 1952, the University of California was established to perform research on nuclear energy. Aside from a rich history, Livermore has various recreation opportunities. For the arts, citizens are provided with the Livermore-Amador Symphony, the Livermore Valley Opera, and the Valley Choral Society. For sports, Livermore has the girls softball association, the Livermore Soccer Club and the Livermore National Little league. Livermore has opportunities for recreation complimented by a rich history. Livermore has a well-respected recreation program. Opportunities include arts-oriented activities such as the Livermore Symphony, various teen organizations along with parks and sports activities. Nursery stock is grown, and there is light manufacturing, but the major sources of employment are wineries and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, which conducts nuclear and other scientific research.
